Research shows how Facebook, Instagram ‘influenced’ US 2020 presidential elections

Meta's collaboration with independent researchers to investigate Facebook and Instagram's impact on the 2020 US election has published its first set of research papers. The papers analysed Facebook and Instagram's algorithms and their effects on users' political beliefs. The study revealed Facebook's high degree of ideological segregation and that conservative users were more likely to consume false information. Another study replacing algorithmic news feeds showed that short-term changes did not alter users' political views. The research indicates how addictive Meta's algorithm can be while highlighting its impact on political polarisation and misinformation.
